What is Preparing for Adulthood?

Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) is the umbrella term used to describe the support and pathways that young people with SEND should consider when thinking about their future aspirations and goals. Young people with SEND, who may not follow the same path as their mainstream peers, need to be given the time and information to make good choices about their adult lives. If the young person is likely to need support after education, it is important to explore options and get the right provision in place from health and/or social care. Young people and their families need to understand the options open to them and how these important transitions can be managed most effectively. We have created this toolkit to support you in making the best decisions about your young person鈥檚 future.

The Four Pillars of PfA

Preparation for Adulthood covers four main areas and it is these that we ask you and your young person to think about, particularly when reviewing plans and thinking ahead to life beyond school:

  1. Work and Employment
  2. Friends, Relationships and Community
  3. Independent Living
  4. Remaining healthy

The Local Offer

What is a SEND Local Offer?

The SEND Code of Practice says that all local authorities must have a Local Offer that sets out, in one place, all the education, health and social care provision for children and young people aged 0-25 years in their area who have special educational needs or are disabled.

See all the different local offers below, these are separated by area:聽
